Oak City Kids Classroom Assistants support the mission of Oak City Kids by creating a safe, fun, and Christ-centered environment where every child can encounter Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and build meaningful friendships. Classroom Assistants serve alongside the classroom Lead Teacher to maintain order, engage kids, and help make Sunday “the most fun day of the week” while following all Oak City Kids Handbook protocols.

Job title: Oak City Kids Classroom Assistant
Reports to: Kloe Henderson (205.807.8563 // [email protected])
Schedule: Sunday mornings; must be in the classroom, ready to receive children by 9:35 AM and remain until all kids are picked up and the room is closed.
Core Responsibilities
Arrive on time or early (9:35 AM), dressed appropriately, ready to serve with a positive, welcoming attitude.
Partner with the Lead Teacher to create a safe, fun, orderly classroom where kids can encounter God and build friendships.
Maintain active supervision of all children at all times; never leave children unattended and always follow the two-adult accountability rule.
Engage with kids during free play, worship, story time, and activities through conversation, play, and encouragement.
Support the Lead Teacher by:
Helping with classroom management and redirection
Passing out and monitoring snacks and water
Writing kids’ names on coloring sheets, activity pages, and white bags
Assisting with crafts, games, and clean-up
Quietly handling practical needs while the Lead Teacher tells the story (snacks, bathroom runs, supplies).
Follow all Oak City Kids policies in the handbook, including safety, bathroom, diaper, illness, discipline, child protection, radios, check-in/check-out, and parent communication protocols.
Model Christlike character, language, and attitude, remembering that you are representing Oak City Church to kids and families.
Expectations & Standards
Professional Conduct
Dress modestly and practically for serving with kids; wear your Oak City Kids t-shirt or lanyard when provided.
Follow the no-phone policy in classrooms: phones put away, no texting/scrolling/pictures unless specifically approved by the Oak City Kids Director.
Use calm, encouraging tones with kids and adults; resolve conflict by following the discipline and safety protocols, not your own methods.
Classroom Operations
Opening
Be in your classroom, ready to serve, by 9:35 AM.
Put on your Oak City Kids t-shirt or lanyard.
Store your phone away (bag/purse/locked screen, not in hand or pocket for use).
Check in with your Lead Teacher for the day’s plan (story, craft, activities).
Begin welcoming kids and families:
Help kids find a seat, color sheet, or toy.
Actively engaged with children by playing games, reading books, coloring, etc.
During Service
Actively supervise and engage:
Sit with kids, talk with them, play, help with activities.
Watch for unsafe behavior and gently redirect.
During story time:
Help kids stay focused by sitting with them, modeling and listening. If a child is causing a disruption, you can redirect them back to listening to the teacher
Quietly handle needs (snacks, bathroom, tissues, crying kids) so the Lead Teacher can keep teaching.
Help with activities:
Write names on coloring pages.
Pass out craft supplies and snacks.
Assist with bathroom breaks following bathroom protocol.
Follow all safety protocols:
Closing
Help supervise pickup:
Keep kids in the room until the Lead Teacher confirms the parent has the correct matching tag.
Help kids gather their belongings, crafts, etc.
Once all kids are picked up and the Lead Teacher releases you, help:
Disinfect toys, tables, chairs, and surfaces as listed in the handbook.
Put away supplies and throw away trash
